Opening Plenary: Post-crisis Europe: can we emerge stronger?
Date: Wednesday 30 June 10 - 11:15 am to 12:30 pm
Type: Plenary sessions
The financial and economic crisis initially saw a coordinated EU response in reigning in finance and economic recovery efforts. The Lisbon Treaty is in place to streamline EU decision making, and the ‘Europe 2020’ strategy is set to boost smart, sustainable growth and jobs in the post-crisis era. But Europe is recovering slower (1% GDP growth in 2010) than the world economy (4.5%) with the US at 2.7% and China showing even double digit figures. Also, the EU lacked a fast, common approach in helping debt-stricken Greece, raising doubts over the future of the euro. Will Europe develop the socio-economic governance to create the stability and reform so desperately needed?
