Dr Janez Potočnik has been European Commissioner for Environment since February 2010. From 2004 – 2010 he held the position of European Commissioner for Science and Research. From 1991 until 2004 he was assistant professor at the University of Ljubljana where he lectured on statistics and economy. He worked as a researcher until he was appointed Director of the Institute of Macroeconomic Analysis and Development of the Republic of Slovenia in 1994. In 1998 the Government of the Republic of Slovenia appointed him Head of the Negotiating Team for Accession of the Republic of Slovenia to the EU. In 2000 he was also acting Director of Government Office for European Affairs. He was appointed Minister Councillor at the Office of the Prime Minister in 2001. In 2002 the Government of the Republic of Slovenia appointed him Minister without portfolio responsible for European Affairs.
